a group of people attack a man in downtown san jose and it proves to be deadly. we are live at the scene to tell you about what police found here that may be key in their investigation. the government on high alert as health officials scramble to contain a deadly outbreak of the ebola virus in west africa and how this is

impacting a local woman's attempt to bring home her adopted son. >> reporter: a hit-and-run driver plows onto a san francisco city sidewalk hitting two pedestrians and a taxicab. we'll tell you who exactly was hurt and what charges the suspect may face. and an elderly woman attacked and robbed at an atm. why east bay police need your help to solve the case. "mornings on 2" begins right now. we're live in san jose. it's 7:01. we're following developing news where police are investigating a deadly stabbing near the fairmont hotel. ktvu's janine de la vega has been on the scene in the heart of downtown san jose since 4:30 this morning. she's talking with police and people in the area and coming up in two minutes, she will tell us how much longer the streets are expected to be blocked off. good morning. welcome to "mornings on 2." i'm tori campbell. good morning. i'm dave clark. let's talk about weather and

traffic. steve is working with the computers, looking up in the sky. i saw some interesting things in the sky myself, steve, when i ducked outside our door. >> like that. >> just like that. i'm telling you. >> well, the fog is there. the low clouds are there. the higher clouds are moving out, believe it or not. it will be mostly sunny away from the coast. by it, there's plenty of low clouds. low clouds all the way up to eureka. the tropical clouds will fire up some thunderstorm activity. i think sacramento up in the mother lode, sierra nevada looks much, much better forethunderstorm activity today -- for thunderstorm activity today. fog, is up, high clouds. cool -- fog, sun, high clouds. cool, and warm to hot if you are aware from the coast. we have a little bit of a breeze. a couple of showers trying to develop around tracy. the altamont pass looks like they've fallen apart. there's development up in the sierra, carson city, reno. i think that bears watching

later in the day. 60s on the temperatures or 50s. calistoga is down to 42. 55 healdsburg. sewas was poll -- sebastopol. mostly sunny inland. high clouds, kind of muggy, humid. 90s to the intear year. 80s around the bay. 60s, 70s year the water. here's sal. we're looking at a commute where traffic is definitely busier than it has been in the last hour, 20-minute drive time between the core -- car key knees and the bay bridge. when you -- carquinez and the bay bridge. when you get to the toll plaza, there's been a few incidents. the approach from 880 looks pretty good as you drive down from the toll plaza. that's the best approach. you can see this slow traffic from the maze. most of these lanes, some lanes

are clearer than others. some people have gas tack. this morning in concord, southbound 680, we have traffic that's moving along relatively well. there was a couple of earlier minor incidents. they are gone. 580, though, not so good, especially if you are driving in from the 205 area. a lot of this traffic is slow. your drive time is going to be about 48 minutes from grant line road to the 680 interchange. 7:04. back to the desk. >> all right. thank you, sal. developing news in san jose where a man was stabbed to death during an attack by a group of people. it happened at 2:15 this morning outside the fairmont hotel on south market street. ktvu's janine de la vega joins us live with the items police found in the area that are now being considered pieces of evidence. >> reporter: there's a lot of debris scattered here on market street in front of the bank of america as well as in the plaza of cesar chavez.

the most visible thing, the black backpack where you see the evidence markers. there were also beer bottles and other items found in the park. police are collecting it all as possible evidence in this deadly stabbing. at 2:15 a.m., police say a group of five or six people attacked a man at park and market streets. he was stabbed at least once. police arrived on scene and emergency crews rushed the victim to the hospital. but he was pronounced dead shortly after. homicide detectives have been canvassing the area. they are conducting interviews. police are still trying to determine a motive. but from the preliminary investigation they say this does not appear to be gang- related. police are not sure if the man knew his attackers or if this was random. >> it's too early in the investigation. as soon as we can kind of find out from the witnesses, you know, whether or not there was some sort of a conversation between the victim and the suspects prior to the attack, then we can go ahead and confirm some of that information. >> reporter: police are looking for the suspects but have not put out any descriptions yet.

we do not know the name of the victim. all police have told us is they believe he was 33 years old and did not appear to be homeless. i say that because transients are known to hang out in the plaza decesar chavez park overnight. detectives were working a homicide last night and now there's this one. no connection we're told between the two. this marks the 22nd homicide of the year. park street here is closed at market and market -- south market is closed between san fernando and san carlos. we're told that that will still remain closed for at least another hour because they still have to conduct their investigation. reporting live from san jose, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. 7:06. new this morning, a magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck southern mexico just a few hours ago, sending people running in the streets for safety. the quake was reported before 4:00 this morning. it was centered in vera cruz

but was felt as far as mexico city. people say the quake rattled doors and light fixtures. at one point, there were evacuations but no serious damages or injuries were reported. six people are recovering from injuries they suffered in a very serious hit-and-run crash last night. it involved a stolen car and a taxicab. it happened at jones and post street in the tenderloin district. ktvu's tara moriarty joining us live now to tell us what witnesses are saying about that crash. tara? >> reporter: well, we keep hearing popping noises since we've been here at 4:00, the cars keep running over the broken glass and other debris that's still in the roadway here. witnesses say that a man came flying up over the hill and left a trail of destruction in his wake. police officers say that they tried to pull over the man in a stolen minivan just two blocks away from the crash scene on post and jones. but the driver sped off and ran a red light before smashing

into a taxicab. we spoke to a witness who did not want to be identified who said the impact of the crash sent both vehicles on the sidewalk striking two pedestrians. >> he came through that lot with the red lied. he didn't -- red light. he didn't make an attempt to brake. no skid marks. he hit the taxi at full force. >> reporter: six people were hurt. a bicyclist was critically r injured. police say initially they did not chase the suspect because the traffic violation was just an infraction and didn't warrant a pursuit. after the crash, the suspect ran from the scene and tried to board a bus around the corner. officers were able to find him. that man faces hit-and-run charges and possibly manslaughter if the victim doesn't pull through. where the orange cones are, there used to be a traffic light there.

they not only uprooted a traffic light but one of the windows here is taken out as well as some of the bars. we're hoping to get a condition on the victim. when we get more information, we'll pass it along to you. live in san francisco, i'm tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. a teen in fremont recovering after being hit by a car while skateboarding. it happened around 5:00 on paseo padre parkway near baylor street. investigators say the 15-year- old had just left the skate park. according to the witnesses, the two never saw each other, the driver and the skateboarder. the teen was in and out of conscious ness at the hospital. but his injuries don't appear to be as seriously as thought. >> he probably landed here at the curb line, went through a cat scan. it does not appear that anything is life-threatening at this point. he got lucky. >> police say the driver stopped. she's cooperating with the

investigation. 7:09. there appears to be another problem with a new skate park in san francisco's south of market neighborhood. in recent days, our crews have noticed an increase in the amount of graffiti at the park. the $2 million project opened on july 1st under highway 101. last week, we told you about complaints about public europeanation and -- urination. neighbors say skaters are in the park well after the 9:00 p.m. closing time. the city is working on adding extra patrols to enforce the closing hours. there's also talk of bringing in mobile bathrooms. alameda police say an act of vandalism at a baseball field left many children disappointed and wasted thousands of gallons of precious water. someone deliberately flooded the baseball field at college of alameda. groundskeepers say on saturday night, someone turned on the sprinkler system and then broke off the sprinklerheads sending

thousands of gallons of water 0 gushing on the field for hours. the water made a mess of the field and forced the cancellation of three championship games. >> whoever did that, it wasn't cool. you have to think of the -- the other kids that are playing. >> we're trying to conserve water on the field and we're doing everything to minimize the consumption of water to make this field look great and then this happens. everything we saved gets thrown away. >> as many as 100,000 gallons of water was wasted. the vandals also tore down two banners and scattered bags of chalk in the dugout. police say they believe it was a targeted attack and the damage is estimated to be up to $12,000. the golf club still swinging at a 52-year-old san francisco golf course two days before it may be forced to close its doors. the gleneagles golf course is due to close on thursday if the

operator and city can't reach a new lease deal which is set to expire. the owner says higher water bills have risen 40% because of the drought. there are reports the two sides are about 75,000 to 90,000 apart on the water subsidy issue. crime is also a factor. that golf course is located in one of the most violent neighborhoods in the city. 7:12. she went to an atm to take out money and ended up in the hospital. coming up at 7:30, the violent attack on an elderly woman in richmond that has police turning to the public for help. but next -- no charges for a father whose baby died after he left him inside of a hot car. the explanation from the district attorney who says this was not a crime. good morning. right now, traffic is still a little bit slow in some areas, although we've seen improvement. not here, though. 280 all of a sudden is slow. we'll tell you what's causing the slow down in the west valley.

7:15. ukrainian investigators say they are learning more from the black boxes retrieved from malaysia flight 17. that flight with 298 people on board was shot down on july 17th as it flew over a war zone in eastern ukraine. everyone on board was killed. yesterday, investigators from ukraine said information from the black boxes showed the plane was destroyed by a massive explosive decompression caused by shrapnel from a missile. that has not yet been confirmed by investigators from the u.s. and europe. meanwhile, a team of international investigators still have not been able to

reach the crash site. they've had to turn back multiple times after heavy gunfire and shellings was heard in the area. the crash site is being controlled by pro-russian rebels. investigators fear evidence might have been tampered with. each day they are unable to access the site is another letdown for families. the santa clara d.a. decided no charges will be fired against a father after his 9-month-old son died after being left inside a hot car. this happened in april. the authorities say the baby was left in the car for at least nine hours. lawyers say after an investigation, they determine the father had a change in his routine. he was very tired and legitimately thought his son was at his baby-sitter's house. >> the law would require a certain level of criminal negligence and recklessness. that just didn't occur here. >> now, a health expert who

studies child heat stroke death says on average three hot car deaths happen every week across the nation. in most of the cases, distracted parents are to blame. now it's the alameda county supervisors turn to vote on the lease agreement at the oakland coliseum. the deal is designed to keep the as in oakland for the next ten years. today's vote is expected to end more than a year of heated political debates that often raise doubts about the future of the as in oakland. it comes after lew wolff agreed to accept the last-minute changes to the original lease contract. we've now learned how much it will cost to park at the new home of the 49ers in santa clara. and it will not be cheap. vip parking at levi stadium will cost $50. the cost of parking in the other stadium lots will be $40. the first sporting event at

authorities identify the man who was killed struck by lightning at nick. he was due to start classes next month at his treatment school, school,usc. he was believed to be out swimming or surfing when he was out. he was missing for an hour when

found. lightning from the storm damaged a house and a car and also injured a golfer on catalina island. now, that lightning storm has lifeguards here in the bay area now testing their training. lifeguards at ocean beach in san francisco are watching the sky as well as the water. they say they are trained to clear a beach in case of severe weather. but they are rarely pressed to use that kind of training. >> when something like this happens, it makes everyone more aware up and down the coast to watch out for that dark cloud that might be approaching us. >> now, a flagging system for water conditions, it's been in place for a long time. officials say when lightning strikes, it's every swimmer's responsibility to pay very careful attention to the conditions. a bay area woman is being credited for a daring rescue to save a beached shark. here is a photo of the shark. we're told it's a juvenile salmon shark. it was found beached near lands inn in san francisco.

the woman said she spotted the shark while hiking. she took it to a spot where she thought it could swim free of the surf. she says the shark stayed calm and never acted aggressively. a young man is shot and killed while walking to a friend's house for a barbecue. >> laying on the floor with blood all over him, on his back and on his face. >> what people who live in this san jose neighborhood are saying about the violence. >> reporter: we are learning more about the victim of a violent robbery at this atm. we're looking at traffic troubles around the bay area. we're looking at commutes doing well, highway 24 falls into that category with a little bit of slowing in lay fayette. we'll tell -- la fayette. we'll tell you about a problem in the north bay. the low clouds are very persistent. temperatures anywhere from 60s to almost 100. we'll show you that coming up.

at travis. there's still a component of an onshore breeze and a lot of fog but it doesn't matter in this pattern. anybody out towards the sacramento valley or towards shasta/lassen or sierra, there will be activity in the way of thunderstorms. 90s through the interiors. 60s, 70s, 80s closer to the bay and water. here's sal. we still have traffic that will be busy at the toll plaza although we've seen improvement. it's still backed up for a 20- minute drive time into san francisco. nothing out of the ordinary and there is actually no trouble on the bridge getting between oakland and san francisco. also looking at 880 northbound and southbound, still a nice drive from downtown oakland to the oakland international exit. it's taking about five minutes. if you are driving south, taking ten minutes between 238 and 8 4. i want to mention the traffic in solano county will be busy as you drive through. driving on the eastshore freeway as we mentioned is okay. driving through the macarthur maze, 21 minutes there.

silverado trail at hennessey, there is a closure because of some -- because of a crash near hennessey. that's in the city of napa. it will require a detour for up to the next 12 hours. if you are going up to the wine country, you will be detoured in this area. 7:33. back to the desk. an elderly woman recovering after a violent robbery at a richmond bank earlier this morning. now the police want your help to find her attacker. ktvu's christien kafton live in richmond to tell us about a reward offered in this case. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. that's right. richmond police offering a $5,000 reward for anyone who helps them capture the robber. we'll show you the pictures in just a minute. let's tell that you bank customers are telling us that they are shocked hearing that someone was attacked right here in point richmond. >> was very surprised to hear that someone had been attacked

here. >> reporter: richmond police say the robbery and attack happened july 5th at about 6:45 in the evening. they say the victim withdrew money from the atm when she was attacked. the victim was hospitalized, has been released and is covering from her injuries. the robber hopped in the passenger seat of a nearby suv and sped off. police are not releasing the identity of the victim but people in the area say they've heard about the robbery and they have heard about the robbery victim. >> i was -- i was very shocked. really, really shocked. i was even more shock to learn it was the wife of a political official, my understanding. >> reporter: we told you about that surveillance camera, richmond police have released some photos captured by a bank surveillance camera. they say the robber in this case is a black woman in her late 20s to early 30s, between 5'5" and 5'7", about 145 pounds. at the time of the robbery, she was wearing tan pants, a white

top and carrying a large dark colored purse during the robbery. this robbery taking place july 5th. police hoping someone sees the photos from the surveillance video and will recognize the suspect and come forward and again, they are offering a $5,000 reward in this case. in richmond, christien kafton, ktvu channel 2 news. san jose police in addition to that deadly stabbing earlier this morning, they are also investigating a deadly shooting. it happened less than 12 hours earlier. it happened yesterday afternoon on gramercy place in east san jose. kathy franco, a family friend, says david escalera was walking to her husband when he was shot. she ran to the area to find him in the streets. she said david escalera was a close friend of her son and had just graduated from the san jose conservation. >> this is a bad area here.

you can't even walk, walk anywhere without worrying if you are gonna get shot. i can't believe this. such a good boy. >> police say the motive behind the shoot, still not clear. they are investigating whether it was gang-related. police who live in the neighborhood say there's been a rise in violence. and some are afraid to leave their houses in the middle of day. police arrested a man who they say tried to kidnap an 11- year-old girl. the girl was walking at 163rd and east 14th street yesterday when she was approached by a man in a car. as he opened the car door, he tried to pull her in, the child ran to a local youth facility and told a deputy about the incident. the man was arrested. his identity has not been released. two connector ramps on a busy east bay freeway are open this morning after a chase and fiery crash last night that caused big delays. it happened shortly before 9:00

on westbound interstate 80 at the you macarthur maze. the chp says the driver led them on a chase from berkeley. it ended in oakland on the ramp from westbound interstate 80 to southbound 880 when the car crashed and burst into flames. the driver tried to run away but was arrested. 7:37. some of the 1200 people evacuated because of a fire burning in the sierra foothills east of sacramento, they are being allowed to go back home. the fire's in el dorado and amador counties. it's now 75% contained. the fire started friday. it's now burned 3800 acres. calfire says it was started by someone driving over a patch of dry vegetation. calfire is trying to keep a fast-moving wildfire from spreading even further into yosemite national park. right now, two of the main roads linking the bay area to the park are still closed. those roads are highway 120 and

part of big oak flat road. despite the fire, the park and all of the entrance gates are still open. however, the plain flat, yosemite creek and bridle campgrounds are closed. the fire is 5% contained. the cause is still under investigation. 7:38. today, governor jerry brown will take a break from his trade visit in mexico to sit down and talk immigration with mexico's president and some religious leaders. the meeting comes as an increase of unaccompanied young migrants and their families have crossed the u.s. border since october. last week, texas governor rick perry announced he will be sending up to a thousand national guard troops to deal with the increase. governor brown criticized that plan yesterday. while an immigration crisis continues at the bodder, white house officials are acting to grant permits to potentially millions of illegal immigrants.

it's a move that could lead lead some conservative republicans to push for impeople proceedings against the president. right now, 11.5 million immigrants live in the country illegal. u.s. health officials are keeping a close eye on the ebola virus in western africa. so far, 670 people have died and we've learned this morning that three americans working in africa have been infected and one of them has died. despite this news, ktvu channel 2 reporter brian flores joins us live to explain why this is not stopping a san francisco woman from traveling to this region. good morning, brian. >> good morning. natalie of san francisco will fry fly out of -- will fly out of sfo to be reunited with her son she adopted a few months ago. she's also nervous because of the ebola virus that's killed hundreds and is spreading. the virus which has only been pinpointed mainly in western africa has infected more than

1200 people including three american aide workers there. it's killed more than 650 people in guinea, liberia. the virus is spread by direct contact with a sick person's blood or body fluids or contaminated on jebts. u.s. officials are keeping a close eye on the situation. the cdc has sent out how to pinpoint symptoms. they are checking international passengers for the virus and there are buckets of chlorine in freetown for disinfection at the airport. that's where natalie is traveling to. after she arrives in freetown, she will travel an hour south to be with her adopted son, 14- year-old kye smart. she will meet with officials to see if they can expe died the adoption process. she received help from nancy pelosi and dianne feinstein's

office on getting that meeting sooner than expected. she still knows theres is -- there is a lot of work ahead. >> his parents died at the center of the ebola outbreak. so if the u.s. embassy needs to check source document, somebody would have to go in the epicenter of this outbreak and i fear that they would just delay it until the whole ebola outbreak has kind of subsided. >> natalie also said she bought a one-way ticket to sierra lee own because she doesn't know how long the process will take and if there will be travel problems with the outbreak. she's met with several doctors and disease experts here in the u.s. in the meantime on what to bring. she said she's packing plenty of gloves, masks and medications for her and her son. i'm brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. >> quite a story. thank you. a deadly attack outside of san jose's fair monthotel.

a suspected sex offender and fugitive from california was shot dead in a shootout with new york police and u.s. marshals. the credit for tracking him down is going to a new tv show from john walsh. >> this guy is allegedded to have molested his college roommate's son. he was the guy that everybody trusted the -- the family trusted so much to take care of this little boy. >> that man from suburban san diego has been on the run for two years. he was arrested in 2012 after the son of a family friend said he was mow lessed. he posted bail and an arrest warrant was issued whenever he never showed up to court. in the past week, his story was showed twice on "the hunt." >> the public was able to be our eyes and ears. >> tips led police to a smoke

stop in manhattan. that's where he was working. as soon as i police enenterred the shop, he started to shoot. he was killed. freddie alexander facing charges for starting the bull fire in shasta county. investigators say his truck's exhaust sparked the fire. manslaughter charges have been added because investigators found the body of a man who died trying to escape the flames. that fire scorched almost 20 square miles before it was contained. the bay area has a lot riding on a scheduled vote on capitol hill today. the u.s. senate is set to consider legislation that would keep federal highway money flowing to the state. with the deadline a few days away. the bay area relies on federal

it's slow from 87. that's the least slow traffic i see. 7:48. let's go to steve. higher clouds look like they are drifting out of the area. you can see everybody is lifting up to the sierra, northern sacramento valley or out to the valley. better opportunity for thunderstorms today up in tahoe, truckee, bridgeport, mammoth and through shasta/lassen as the tropical moisture gets lifted out. 60s for some, 50s for others. 66 in livermore. if the tropical clouds are not in praise, it will start to warm up -- place, it will start to warm up quick. we have some fog. tropical clouds continue to take aim not at us but southern california, the remains of a tropical storm here falling

apart. they are heading to l.a. and san diego. they've had a lot of lightning strings down there. partly sunny, coastal fog. a little breezy. there is a component of a westerly breeze. high clouds, muggy, humid. anywhere from 60s, 70s to near 100 for some. clearlake will go 97. same for antioch and brentwood. livermore, 95. 74 in berkeley. 86 in castro valley. now, it was cooler yesterday. today they will warm you back up in the mid-90s. 80s upper or mid for san jose. santa clara, daly city, pacifica, 66. san mateo, 83 and palo alto at 87 degrees. it will be a muggy day unless you are right there by the coast, then it won't be that warm. it's not that cool either. warmer weather takes us into wednesday. it looks like a decrease in the tropical clouds. cooler by sunday. ten minutes before 8:00. new this morning, in the last hour, hamas, the group that

governs gaza, announced it's rejecting a proposed 24-hour truce in gaza. that proposal came early this morning from a senior palestinian official who had said he was speaking on behalf of hamas. israel has not commented. palestinian officials say 100 people have been killed in israeli air strikes just since last night. it was the heaviest night of bombing since the recent fighting began three weeks ago. the israeli military said it targeted buildings it considers signals of hamas controlled. that includes the gaza electricity company, the power station and a tv station. the home of a hamas leader was also bombed. a new report came out this morning. it shows u.s. home prices went up more than expected in may. the case-shiller report says prices for homes sold in the 20 largest markets were up 1.1% and up 1.6% in san francisco.

that's the second largest gain behind tampa, florida. all 20 metropolitan areas showed gains. but sales, they slowed to their lowest level since february of last year. the faa wants to impose a $12 million fine on southwest airlines. the faa says the fine is related to required repairs to boeing 737s. the faa says southwest made cosmetic repairs to some jets that could have had cracked ill loom yum -- aluminum. if they are ordered to pay, it would be the second largest fine in aviation history. largest fine $24 million against american airlines. eight minutes before 8:00. and there are no charges being filed in a case of a child who was left in a car by the parents. we'll explain more on that coming up. and plans for an historic gold rush celebration. well, it's a bust.

we'll determine what action is required. we'll take action if somebody has fallen short. >> the state puc also released a statement saying it takes all allegations of misconduct very seriously. 7:55. today los angeles prosecutors are due to formally charge four suspects arrested yesterday and accused in the brutal killing of a usc grad student from china. police say it happened last week during a robbery attempt while the victim was talking to his -- walking to his apartment near the campus. detectives say the four suspects beat the 24-year-old student to death with a baseball bat. now, his death comes two years after two other usc grad students from china were shot to death as they sat in a parked car next to the campus. california's drought, forcing the can'tlation of a -- cancellation of a sacramento tradition. the gold rush says celebration. in old sacramento canceled. organizers usually bring in 200 tuns of dirt. they cover up the streets and

make it look like the 1850s. but it takes 100,000 gallons of water to clean it up afterwards. leaders say you just can't do that this year. and they say the celebration justent would be the same without dirt covered streets. >> for those who have seen the gold rush days with the dirt, that rel sets the atmosphere in old sacramento. it really does turn back the clock. you take out the dirt, it impacts the horses. >> there are other activities being planned for that weekend. but business owners say it probably eent won't be able to make up for that busy weekend. a horrible hit-and-run crash in the tenderloin district. it involves a stolen car, a taxicab and two pedestrians. >> reporter: we're live in downtown san jose, where a man was attacked by a group of people and died. what police found near the

they are lifting out of the area east and north and down towards southern california. we seem to be between those two bands. there is a lot of low clouds. sierra nevada will be dealing with some thundershower activity today and so will northern california, northern sacramento valley. mid-60s for some. livermore is 66. it listen hot there. some areas -- it will be hot there. some areas in the 60s. the high cloud deck is getting out of here. that's not the case. look at this. there's remains of a tropical storm coming up. it looks like most of this will stay south, at least today. partly sunny. i say that. it will be sun for some inland. 60s to 90s. here's sal into we're still looking at slow traffic in san jose. i'm gonna start with 280 which is improving a little bit. but not much. if we go to the maps, i will show you all of the red which means slow traffic on all of these maps. 85 has become worse.

i wouldn't be on 101. i think i might stick it out through 280 or 85. 101 is just ridiculous getting into mountain view and it's slow pretty much all the way from san jose to mountain view. getting into the south bay, southbound 880 is slow from 238 down to about stevenson in fremont and then the livermore commute is very slow. this is obviously the peak of the commute right now. as we go back to live pictures, westbound 24, pleasant hill road to the caldecott, 12 minutes. at the bay bridge toll plaza, we see about a 15-minute drive time -- 15, 20-minute drive time into san francisco. it's 8:02. back to the desk. >> thank you, sal. we continue to follow developing news in san jose where a man was attacked by a group of people and stabbed. he died at the hospital. ktvu's janine de la vega is there where just a few minutes ago, police reopened part of the area around the fairmont hotel where the attack happened. good morning, janine. >> reporter: grling -- good morning, tori.

they did open up southbound market street as well as park avenue. they just finished picking up evidence here lying in the street, including a black backpack. we don't know if it belonged to the victim. right now, just plaza park is roped off pause they want to pick up evidence there. police say someone called 911 at around 2:15 to report that a group of five or six people was attacking a man near park and market. police arrived on scene and found the victim suffering from at least one stab wound. emergency crews rushed him to the hospital. but he was pronounced dead shortly after. police have been canvassing the area looking for evidence. i'm told they will be looking to see if surveillance cameras in the area captured anything. detectives say numerous pieces of debris are scattered throughout the crime scene that they are taking as evidence but they are unsure if they are connected to the crime. >> there are a bunch of beer bottles that are in the middle of the park. unknown if they are in the park

hanging out or if it's total random act of violence. as the investigation continues, hopefully we'll have more information. >> reporter: police say they don't know the most infor the stabbing but -- motive for their stabbing but preliminarily, its to not appear to be gang -- it does not appear to be gang related. the suspects are still at large. no descriptions have been put out yet. this is the second homicide in 24 hours. detective sas there doesn't appear to be any connection between the two. the other happened on the east side yesterday. the homicide this morning marks the 23rd homicide of the year. reporting live from san jose, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right, janine. san francisco police meantime say six people are recovering from injuries suffered in a very serious hit- and-run crash last night involving a stolen car and a taxicab. it happened at jones and post street in the tenderloin district. the stolen car hit a cab and then careened onto the sidewalk

hitting two pedestrians. ktvu's tara moriarty joining us live now and you have new information, tara, you just found out about the suspect. >> reporter: yeah, police say that the suspect is a 26-year- old man and his passenger, a 38- year-old woman. they tell us two blocks from here they tried to pull the suspect over for a traffic violation. but he took off. they decided it was not worth it to chase him. witnesses say here at the intersection, they were shocked. they say the man was 1350eding in a mini -- speeding in a minivan, he ran a red light, slammed into a taxicab. two pedestrians were hit. one of them a bicyclist critically injured and taken to san francisco general. police say four people were hurt, the suspects and two men ages 29 and 60. the people in the cab ended up being okay. police later determined that the nin minivan -- minivan was hotel. one tourist told us about the

aftermath. >> obviously cat strovel -- catastrophic. you always think if we had gotten back five minutes earlier, we would have been right there. you don't really think at that moment. tremendous sympathy for everybody involved. >> reporter: police say the suspect ran from the scene and tried to board a bus around the corner but they were able to catch him. he will face hit-and-run charges and possibly manslaughter if the victim doesn't make it. back here live on the corner, you can see that the city has just shown up to try to replace this traffic light that was ripped off when the crash happened. a window and its bars have also been damaged at this building that you see here if we pan over to the left behind this utility truck, there is a window that's going to be -- needs to be replaced. we're trying to get more information about the victim. he was in critical condition at

last check. we're still trying to find out if that's still the case this morning. we'll let you know as soon as we find out. live from san francisco, tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. 8:06. the teenager in fremont is recovering after being hit by a car while skateboarding. it happened around 5:00 last night on paseo parkway. the investigators say the 15- year-old just left the skate park. it looked like the skateboarder and the driver never saw each other. police say the teenager was in and out of consciousness but his injuries do not appear to be as serious as first feared. >> it sounds like he landed head first on the cement. went through a cat scan. it doesn't appear anything is life-threatening e got lucky. >> police say the driver stopped immediately and she is cooperating with investigators. there appears to be another problem with a new skate park in san francisco's south of market neighborhood. in recent days our crews have

noticed an increase in graffiti at the skate park. the $2 million project opened july 1st beneath highway 101. last week, we told you about complaints about public urination and loud aftershowers noise. neighbors say skate borders are in the -- skateboarders are until park well after the 9:00 p.m. closing times. the police is considering bringing in extra patrols and they are also talking about bringing in mobile bathrooms. and act of vandalism at a baseball field left many children disappointed and wasted thousands of gallons of water. police say someone deliberately flooded the baseball field at college of alameda. grounds keepers say on saturday night, someone turned on the sprinkler system, then broke off the head, sending thousands of gallons of water gushing on the field for hours. the water made a mess of the field and forced the

cancellation of three championship games. >> whoever did that, that wasn't cool because you gotta think of the -- of the other kids that are playing. >> we're trying to conserve water on this field and we're doing everything to -- to minimize the consumption of water to make this field look great and then this happens. everything that we saved gets thrown away. >> as many as 100,000 gallons of water were wasted. the vandals scattered chalk in the dugout. police believe it was targeted. the damage is estimated to be up to $12,000. the golf club still swinging at a 52-year-old san francisco golf course two days before it may be closed to close its doors. the glean eagles golf course is due to close on thursday if the operator and the city can't reach a new lease deal which is set to expire. the owner says the higher water

bills have risen 40% because of the drought are a big factor in the decision to shut down. there are reports the two sides are about 75,000 to 90,000 apart on the water subsidy oish -- issue. crime is a factor. this is one of the most violent neighborhoods in the city. supporters of raising oakland's minimum wage to 12.25 an hour will hold a rally. the council is set to vote tonight on putting another proposal on the november ballot. that one is backed by nonprofit groups that won an exemption from the increase. the nonprofits say a higher minimum wage means they would have to reduce the number of jobs they would have to offer to needy workers. the san francisco bay could soon be cleaner.

it is 8:14. the santa clara district attorney decided that no charges will be filed against a los gatos father after his 9- month-old son died after being left inside a hot car. this happened on april 16th and authorities say the baby was left in the car for at least nine hours. but lawyers say after an

investigation, they determined the father had a change in routine, was very tired and legitimately thought his son was at his baby-sitter's house. >> the law would require a certain level of criminal negligence and recklessness. that just didn't occur here. >> a health expert who studies child heat stroke deaths says on average three hot car deaths occur every week across the nation. in most of those cases, distracted parents are to blame. 8:15. the family of a mother and toddler killed in a fire in san francisco's public housing, they filed a claim against the city. lawyers for the family of ester ione allege the april fire in the sunnyvale housing development was caused by unsafe conditions, including a lack of working smoke detectors. ione and her 3-year-old son santana, they were found dead in the apartment's bathroom. the fire department has not released its final report yet.

that's expected to contain information about whether or not there were working smoke detectors in the unit. the ncaa has just agreed to settle a class-action lawsuit brought by a number of former college athletes. those athletes are fighting for a wide-ranging reform when it comes to dealing with head injuries. the settlement includes a major change in how athletic departments handle the care and safety of all current and former athletes who have received serious blows to the head. it covers both men and women and applies to several sports, including football, hockey, soccer, basketball, wrestling, field hockey and lacrosse. happening today -- now it's the alameda county supervisors' turn to vote on the new lease agreement at the oakland coliseum. the deal is designed to keep the as in oakland for the next ten years. today's vote is expected to end more than a year of heated political debate that often raise doubts about the future

some slow traffic here. it is about a 15, 20-minute drive time into san francisco. no major problems on the bridge. but traffic is going to be busy. also looking this morning at the commute on westbound 92, the san mateo bridge, the traffic is moving along okay. it's about an 11-minute drive. the south bay has been trying to steal the spotlight in a way of bad commutes. 101 is still very heavy. driving up all the way to mountain view if you are driving in your car up there. i would say maybe you should try 85 if you are in the south valley. those two are improving at a faster rate than 280. southbound 880 slows from 92 heading down to fremont. back to the desk. a trip to the bank in richmond turned violent. an elderly woman was attacked and injure. christien kafton is live at the bank. you have new surveillance photos and a reward offered by police to lead to the suspect.

>> reporter: we have calls out to the richmond police to find out if there's updates to the story. again, richmond police offering a $5,000 reward for nfg leading to the -- for information leading to the suspect. pictures right up there richmond police are released some of the still photos. they say the robber is a black woman in her late 20s to early 30s between 5'5" and 5'7", about 145 pounds. now, during the robbery, she was wearing tannent as, a white top -- tan pants a white top and carrying a large purse. the robbery happened around 6:45 in the morning. the 87-year-old woman just withdrew money when the robber attacked her, knocked her to the ground and broke her hip. the victim was hospitalized. she's recovering from her

injuries. the robber hopped in the passenger seat of a nearby suv and sped away. police are not releasing a lot of details. >> i was very shocked. really, really shocked. i was even more shocked to learn it was the wife of a political official, my understanding. >> reporter: again, this robbery took place july 5th. police are hoping that someone sees the surveillance video and sees those still images of the robbery suspect and will contact them with what they know. they are hoping to catch the robber before she strikes again. we're live in richmond, christien kafton, ktvu channel 2 news. we just received some new information about a drive-by shooting in san francisco last night that sent a man to the hospital. it happened about 10:00 last night near levinsborkt and turk. police say a man was standing in the area, when someone drove up, shot him in the leg.

he's expected to be okay. the suspect escaped. if you have any information, call san francisco police. police in san jose, meantime, in addition to -- to investigating a stabbing that happened overnight, they are continuing to investigate other crimes. now, this stabbing happened on gramercy place in east san jose. kathy franco, a family friend, says david escalera was walking to her house with his girlfriend to go to a barbecue when he was shot. she says she ran to the area after hearing the news. she found him lying in the street. she said he was a close friend of her son and had just graduated from the conservation corps. >> this is a bad area here. you can't even walk -- walk anywhere without worrying if you are gonna get shot. i can't believe. such a good boy. >> police are saying the motive behind that shooting still isn't clear. they are investigating whether or not it was gang-related. people who live in the

neighborhood say there has been an increase in violence. some say they are even afraid to leave their houses even in the middle of the day. authorities in san leandro have arrested a man who they say tried to kidnap an 11-year- old girl. the girl was walking at 163rd and east 14th street yesterday when she was approached by a man in a car. as he opened the car door, he tried to pull her in. the child ran to a local youth facility and told a deputy about the incident. the man was arrested. his identity has not been released. two connector ramps are open this morning after a chase and fiery crash last night caused big delays. it happened shortly before 9:00 last night on westbound interstate 80 at the macarthur maze. the chp says a driver led them on a chase from berkeley. it ended in oakland on the ramp from westbound interstate 80 to southbound 880 when the car crashed and burst into flames. the driver tried to run away

but was arrested. 8:35. well, this morning an el sobrante man once suspected of murder is free thanks to his mother's testimony. a contra costa county judge ordered the release of kyle navarro yesterday. his family and friends in the courtroom applauded and cheered the news. the deadly shooting happened back in march in an area called terra hills near pinole. his mother testified about talking with him on the phone at the very moment his friend, nicholas kalen, was shot and killed. the judge ruled that her testimony along with the evidence showed he was not an accomplice to the murder. the ex-boyfriend of the victim's girlfriend is now the only suspect in that killing. 8:36. u.s. health officials are keeping a close eye on the outbreak of the deadly ebola virus in western africa. so far, at least 670 people have died and we've learned this morning that three americans working in africa

have been infected. one of them has died. despite this news, brian flores joifns us now to explain -- joins us now to explain why a san francisco woman is not changing her plans to travel to that part of africa. >> it's excitement and nervousness for natalie of san francisco. she has a flight this afternoon out of sfo to western africa to be reunited with her 14-year- old son she adopted a few months ago. she's preparing as best she can because of the deadly ebola virus. the virus is spread by direct contact with a sick person's blood or body fluids or through contaminated objects. there's concern in this age of air travel that the virus could spread. u.s. officials are keeping a close eye on the situation. reports from sierra leonoe say they are checking international

let's bring you up to date on some of the top stories we're following for you right now -- san francisco police say six people are recovering from injuries suffered in a hit-and- run crash involving a stolen car and a cab. this happened last night in the tenderloin district. police say the stolen car hit a taxicab, then jumped onto the sidewalk hitting two pedestrians. the suspect was arrested a short time later. well, it's the alameda county supervisors' turn to vote on the new as lease agreement an the coliseum. the board will meet this morning and consider a deal designed to keep the as in oakland for the next ten years. and we are still at the scene of developing news in san jose we first told you about at 4:30. a man has died after being attacked and stabbed by a group of people. janine de la vega has been on

this story all morning. you've now moved close to the area where the attack occurred. janine? >> reporter: yes. police still have cesar chavez roped off with crime tape because investigators are picking up evidence. they are not sure if this is all connected to the stabbing. they are hoping to will lead to the victim's killers. someone called to report a group of five or six people around 2:15 a.m. was attacking a man. police arrived on scene and found the victim suffering from at least one stab wound. crews rushed him to the hospital e. he was know -- pronounced dead shortly after. police will be looking to see if surveillance cameras captured anything. they did find a black backpack

found lying in the middle of market street. it's unknown if it belongs to the victim but it was taken as evidence. this is the second homicide. but the two are unrelated. >> we're always concerned about violence in the city. no reason to believe they are connected. the other homicide occurred in east san jose. this one in downtown san jose. right now, again, we're gonna go ahead and take these incidents as they come and hopefully get them solved. >> reporter: police tell us they don't know the motive for this morning's stabbing but from their preliminary investigation police say it doesn't appear to be gang- related. the suspects are still at large. police have not put out descriptions yet. in the last hour, we've seen police collect beer bottles and other items in hopes it will provide clues as to what happened out here and who is responsible. this is the city's 2nd's

today, san francisco supervisors will consider a new crime-fighting plan for the city's bayview district. it's in response to four homicides in the bayview in the past month. malia cohen said it's a tragic situation that's getting out of control. today, she'll ask her colleagues okay the board to create a -- on the board to create a special task force. it will include members of the police force as well as school and community leaders and mental health workers. in the meantime, community and religious leaders in east palo alto have come one their own plan in response to growing violence. they are holding a series of evening prayer walks to allow community members to pray for peace in east palo alto. the prayer group will meet tonight at the st. francis of assisi church at 7:00 tonight. there are serious new allegations tied to the deadly pipeline explosion and fire in san bruno four years ago. the mayor of san bruno is now

calling for the removal of the president of the state public utilities commission amid accusations of illegal conduct. the mayor says recently uncoved e-mail shows a cozy relationship between the puc and pg&e following the disaster that killed eight people and damaged dozens of homes. >> pg&e has made illegal efforts to to influence the cpuc's decisionmakers to affect the utility's financial interests. sadly and shockingly, the cpuc has participated in illegal conduct. >> after we do this thorough review of the communications being discussed here, we'll make a determination of what kind of action is required. be clear, we'll take action if somebody has fallen short. >> the state puc has released a statement saying it takes all allegations of misdone duct very seriously -- misconduct very seriously. a vote in congress means a lot to the bay area. the senate will consider

legislation to keep federal highway money flowing to the states with a deadline just a couple of days away. the bay area depends a lot on federal funding from fixing potholes to building and maintaining highways. that federal money is also used to pay for lowell mass transit projects -- local mass transyits -- transits. the chp cracking down on dangerous highways near construction zones. this is aimed to protect the men and women out there working along the highways. traffic tickets issued in the construction zone carry twice the usual fine. caltrans has more than 700 active projects underway. an antioch police officer shot and wounded a man while trying to arrest him. it happened just after 8:30 yesterday morning at a home on folsom drive near spaulding street. antioch police say they got a call about a rifle that had been found in the street. when an officer got to the

scene, he saw a man running into the garage. police say the officer opened fire after the man did not comply with his orders. police identified the suspect as 34-year-old timothy shawn randolph. they say he has an extensive criminal record. randolph is expected to survive. politics can make for strange bedfellows. an arizona strip club has endorsed a pastor running for congress. according to the arizona republic, the strip club is backing the reverend, a democrat, because he afords affordable student loans and all-day kindergarten. it's a close race. he cannot vote for himself because he was convicted in 2009 of lying to the fbi in a case involving then-phoenix mayor, phil gordon. icts ticket tuesday. two lucky viewers will win two tickets to california's great america. the tickets are good for one day between now and september
